The Gaye Ross Memorial Nursing Scholarship presented to Ashleigh Harrison for 2017

Published October 24, 2017

The Drumheller Area Health Foundation and Bob Ross were pleased to award Ashleigh Harrison of Morrin Alberta the 2017 Gaye Ross Memorial Scholarship.  Ashleigh was one of 8 applicants for this year's scholarship of $1,000.  She's currently enrolled with the University of Calgary in the Bachelor of Nursing program and is in her 4th year there.  She easily met and exceeded the criteria established for the award and we hope that she will continue to excel and return to Drumheller to join our hospital's team.

The Gaye Ross Memorial Nursing Scholarship was established in 1998 by Bob Ross, Gaye's husband, and the Registered Nurses working in the Drumheller Health Centre.  Since the inception of the scholarship, a student has been chosen each year and has received $1,000 to support their education to become a Registered Nurse or a Registered Psychiatric Nurse.  The Drumheller Area Health Foundation administrates this scholarship and applications are reviewed in September of each year.

The Gaye Ross Nursing Scholarship presented to Chelsea Murphy for 2016

(Brad Bilson hands the cheque to Chelsea Murphy)

Chelsea Murphy has been awarded the Gaye Ross scholarship for 2016 to help with her nursing education.

"I wrote an essay to say how I'm following in her foot steps as a nurse and then they awarded me with this scholarship to help with my education" stated recipient Chelsea Murphy. "I'm in my third year of my nursing degree so I still have another year of university and I attend school in Kelowna."

Brad Bilson is a homecare Registered Nurse at the hospital who sat on the selection committee and says her essay was well written.  "You could see that the compassion for nursing was evident in her writing and that's basically how we based our decision on" he commented.

The Gaye Ross Scholarship was created in memory of one of the Drumheller Health Centre's finest nurses. Gaye Ross was an active member of the Drumheller community as well as a respected Registered Nurse.  This scholarship has been available for many years and is available to qualified applicants who live within the perimeter determined by the scholarship committee, and who is attending, or will be attending, post-secondary education to become a Registered Nurse or a Registered Psychiatric Nurse. The scholarship was established in 1998 and gives $1000 to those who are choosing a career as a Registered Nurse or as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse.  It's administered by the Drumheller Area Health Foundation.

Congratulations Chelsea!  We look forward to watching you grow in your chosen career.
